A Beginners Guide to Google My Business by MyRestaurant

If you're planning on marketing your business online, Google My Business is an absolute must! This guide will break down how to set up and use Google My Business for your business to get the most out of it.

Do you need somewhere to start? Just follow these nine steps for success!

A) Find Your Places Page:  Simply type in "business name" and "places" into the search bar. In this case we'll search "my restaurant.co.uk", although you can use "any business name", "any place" or mix them if you wish.

B) Create Your Profile: Start by clicking on "New Business" or "Create a new local listing". You'll be taken to the editing page, which will look something like this:

1. Add Your Location: This is the most important part, and where I start explaining how Google My Business works! Enter your URL - the place you're promoting online. For our example, this is myrestaurant.co.uk. You can also enter a phone number, address and any extra information you might like to include as well.

2. Add Your Website: If you have a website and want to add it, do so by clicking "Add your website". Then enter your domain into the box provided and click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

3. Logo: This is where you can add a logo to your Google My Business if you wish. This is optional and of course completely up to you!

4. Add Your Photos: You can upload up to six high-res photos from your computer or camera with just a few clicks. Simply upload six photos and you're done!

5. Add Your Videos: If you want to record a video introduction or anything else, simply click "Add video" and upload your video file from your computer or camera. You can also add YouTube or Vimeo links, if you wish.

6. Add Your Brief Description: Simply a few words that will appear on the search results page at the top of each search result for your business  - does not have to be long but I recommend it!

C) Start Marketing Your Business: Sign up with Google My Business and you'll be taken straight to the dashboard where all of your listings are. You can change groups or redesign your profile however you like.

D) Keep Your Business Updated: Always keep your business details up-to-date by editing them on your Google My Business profile. It's really quick and convenient.

E) Add Yourself to Search Results: Once the basics are out of the way, it's time to get more creative! One of the most effective ways to market your business is by adding yourself onto search results pages (aka, google search engine results).

There are several ways to do this, but one of the most effective is to create a unique listing or add an additional one. This involves adding a + sign in front of your business name on your Google My Business profile, which will then take users to your page when they search for your business.

Let's look at an example: When you type "My Restaurant" into google, you'll see our Restaurant appear on the first search results page. However, when you add a + sign in front of "My Restaurant", it will then appear on the second page of Google search results.

This is the beauty of this method, as it enables more visitors to see your listing than before - and therefore more potential customers. If you're looking for a restaurant in any specific area, simply type the name into Google and click "near me" to find out more information about your nearest place to buy, eat or drink.
